Ambulance attacked by protesters
Two ER24 paramedics were lucky to escape without any injuries when their ambulance was stoned by protesters along Ukuzimela Road in Malagazi, Durban this morning.
At approximately 8am an emergency call was and paramedics made their way to a residence in the nearby area. They explained that they were travelling on Ukuzimela Road when a group of protesters moved into the road and started throwing rocks at the passing ambulance.
A large rock smashed one of the rear windows of the ambulance. Fortunately, the ambulance was still on their way to the emergency and had no crew or patients in the patient compartment. The paramedics immediately continued to evacuate from the area and alerted the ER24 Emergency Contact Centre. This triggered an alert which dispatched the local branch manager as well as local police. The crew managed to pull over a few kilometres further down the road to assess the damage. Fortunately, they did not sustain any injuries.
The original emergency call was handed over to another nearby ambulance.A case of malicious damage to property will be opened at the police.
