[MACASSAR] Driver critical, three others injured in collision

A man in his 30s has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition following a collision between his BMW and a stationary bakkie in the emergency lane outside Macassar on the N2 this afternoon. Three people, also believed to be in their 30s, standing around the bakkie at the time, have also been injured, two of them seriously.

ER24 paramedics, along with many other services, including the Fire and Traffic Departments, were on the scene at approximately 15:30 this afternoon. The BMW was found in the road with the driver having manged to self extricate even though he had suffered critical injuries. He was treated using Advanced Life Support interventions before Traffic closed the highway for another private services’ medical helicopter to land and transport him to Tygerberg Hospital for further care.

The three people who were standing outside their bakkie at the time were found lying on the scene. One of the men is alleged to have been filling up the radiator with water – he was found to have suffered serious injuries, as was one of the others, a woman. They were both treated with Advanced Life Support interventions on the scene as well. The third person, a man, was found to have suffered moderate injuries. All three were transported to Helderberg Hospital for further care.

The South African Police Services were also on the scene for further investigations.
