[R56] Ten injured in two separate collisions
In the first collision, seven people were injured, among them an 8-year-old girl, when two vehicles collided head-on on the R56 just outside of Ixopo in Pietermaritzburg this morning.
When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly before 10H30, they found one vehicle off the roadway and one in the middle of the road.
Upon further assessment, they found two patients who had sustained serious injuries. Both were airlifted by medical helicopter to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for further medical care.
Five others were also found on the scene, and they had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.
ER24, as well as another medical service on the scene, transported the patients to hospital for further medical care.
In the second collision just outside of Richmond, also on the R56 about 20kms from the first one, three people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate following a head-on collision.
When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 13H00, they found a vehicle on its side in the road as well as a vehicle off the roadway. Upon further assessment, they found a patient lying in the grass next to the vehicle. The other two patients were found walking around on the scene.
ER24, as well as another medical service on the scene, transported the injured to hospital for further medical care.
The exact circumstances surrounding both incidents were not known, but police were on scene for further investigations.
