A male driver believed to be in his mid-thirties has died and four others sustained minor injuries following a collision between two light motor vehicles on the R56 in Westgate, South of Pietermaritzburg last night.

ER24 paramedics arrived just before 7 pm to find multiple services on the scene. One of the vehicles was found down an embankment, the other was still in the road. The deceased driver and two passengers, a male and female in their late 20s/early 30s, were entrapped and required extraction by the Fire Department with ER24 in assistance. The driver unfortunately showed no signs of life and was declared dead on arrival. Another female passenger from the same vehicle was able to free herself and a female driver from the second vehicle had also luckily only suffered minor injuries. All the injured were treated on scene before being transported to a private hospital in the area for further care.

SAPS, the Traffic Department and Search & Rescue were all on hand for further investigations.
